David Rickard - Exhaust

24 hours of exhaled air and foil balloons
dimensions variable

David Rickard externalises one of our most precious, but invisible, resources: fresh air. Meticulously collecting the air he exhaled within a 24-hour period via a respiratory mask, Rickard transfers it into large silver foil balloons that accumulate into a large mass, evincing the space we consume and the fresh air that each of us needs for daily survival. The towering pile of balloons compels us to recognise our own impact upon, and interrelationship with, the space around us.

These series of images were commissioned by Michela Rizzo Gallery in Venice and presented during the 54th Venice Biennale.
